Every day at least one song - Week # 53 (January 26, 2026) - One Year anniversary week -
When I started Barstool Revolution I created a Facebook site and generated a daily thread where I would post at least one song a day. With social media sites increasingly useless for self-promotion to generate traffic to sites like this one - unless you are willing to shell out money - I decided to continue the “tradition” right here to add content and to hopefully generate more traffic to the site. Now in its second year I shall continue to post at least one song every day, old and new and of any genre. Stay tuned and check in daily!

Today marks the one year anniversary of posting at least one song every day. Overall I like how things have progressed with this little project and as time went on I have started to reach a wider and more international audience out there in the world. With that I’d like to thank everyone who follows this page, checks in and enjoys reading about and listening to the tunes on a daily or weekly basis. To make this week a little different I reached out to people who follow Barstool Revolution on Facebook with songs they would like me to post. Today’s post is dedicated to Van Nuck (not the real name) in Western Canada and the guys in Virus X from Niagara Falls, NY from around the corner from us. Both parties requested songs from the Toronto/Hamilton area in Canada, very close to the US/Canadian border and only about 90 Minutes away from us here in Buffalo. I thought it’d be a neat idea to kick off this week with three songs from said area, cheers to Van Nuck and Virus X and thanks for your support! Happy Monday!
Interesting, I didn’t know this version of the Viletones song “Dirty Feeling” at all, as I am only familiar with the material the original line-up had recorded. The song originally appeared on the second EP ‘Look back in Anger’ from 1978 but Mr. Leckie must have decided to re-record it in 1997. It sounds great in my opinion, and since I couldn’t find the original version on Youtube, this will do. Needless to mention that the Viletones were one of the most important bands of the early Toronto punk scene. RIP Steven Leckie on vocals and Freddie Pompeii on guitar.
The Forgotten Rebels from Hamilton/Ontario are still going strong to this day, albeit of course with a different line-up compared to the one when this song was recorded. ‘In Love with the System’ is with certainty one of my favorite punk rock full lengths and when my good friend Alain and I organized a gig for them in Zurich/Switzerland back in 2000 we played the LP up and down to warm up for the gig, which was an absolute blast and a night I shall always remember. Cheers for these two choices, Van Nuck!
Just like the Forgotten Rebels, Teenage Head hailed from Hamilton as well. Both bands should really be regarded as Top punk rock acts on an international level while Teenage Head were a bigger act on Canadian soil, famously causing a riot at the Horseshoe Tavern back in ‘78. Unfortunately I have never seen them live, god knows why that is as I had spent nearly three years in Toronto during the ‘90s. Even more sad is that with vocalist Frankie Venom and guitarist Gord Lewis two original members are no longer with us, rest in peace. Cheers to Virus X for this choice, who themselves have established close relationships with bands and venues across the border dating back decades. That’s it for today, and please do yourselves a favor and dig deeper into the history of Canadian Punk Rock, there is a lot to discover. Pogo on!

It’s freaking cold and windy as hell outside and I really look forward to the commute to work. Anyhow, let’s continue with this week’s song requests and turn to Surfbort. I have never heard of this band, but Andrew from the UK is a fan it seems. He is a gifted lo-fi punk illustrator and has contributed to this website with his take on the Misfits. I am sure there will be more of his illustrations forthcoming, so stay tuned. Anyway, back to Surfbort, a band that started out in Brooklyn/NY and is supposedly now located in Los Angeles. I looked up their releases on discogs and there is quite a bit. It seems that the old stuff is raw and up my alley while the newer stuff is more polished and more boring. This one is an old one released on the excellent Hozac Records and I dig it, thanks Andrew! Happy Tuesday!

Alright, middle of the working week it is and yesterday after work it was the third day in a row I had to clean up the piles of snow, sick and tired of it. Let’s head back to Toronto though after said city was centre of attention with the followers’ requests on Monday. This time it’s a modern day song by Ducks Ltd., again a band I have not heard of. I reached out to Jerid of Out There Records here in Buffalo and he said there is no record he listened to more than the band’s last one released ‘Harm’s Way’. These Torontonians must have listened to many a ‘80s UK indie pop band, and I must say after a few listening the song grew on me. If in Buffalo or visiting make sure you visit Jerid’s excellent record store. Happy Wednesday!

Some time ago I read an article that there are only eleven cities left in the US where people on a modest average salary can afford to buy a home. I also recall from said article that it wasn’t all that long ago when it was thirty cities. It’s not the article I am linking here, but at least that one gives you the list of the cities I am talking about and their geographic proximity. Most of them are situated in the Midwest, a large area of the United States that millions of people call home, including myself although I am never sure whether Buffalo counts as Midwest or Northeast, you tell me. I believe Cleveland/Ohio counts as a Midwestern city, and my long-time friend SuLee has lived pretty much her entire life there. It’s a city with a rich history in rock’n’roll while SuLee’s aptly chosen song describes the mood during the winter months the best, hating the Midwest. Dow Jones & The Industrials hailed from Indiana and were only around for two years but left the world with some catchy and witty songs while “Can’t Stand the Midwest” has to be one of their best. Thanks for this one SuLee! Wishing everyone a great day and try to ignore the piles of snow here in the land of the forgotten!

I met my friend Katrin many moons ago at gigs in Switzerland. Her husband and herself would often be at punk rock gigs, but more often at gigs by bands in the high energy rock’n’roll vein. At one point when I lived in Basel/Switzerland she asked me if I was interested in DJ-ing with her once a month on Fridays and we did. It was in Zofingen, a small town where Katrin lives to this day, where we would DJ punk and metal at a small bar. It was always a fun night for a small but dedicated and thirsty crowd, great memories. So, cheers for being a friend, Katrin, and many thanks for choosing Red Rockers from New Orleans/Louisiana. Their first album is in my opinion one of the best US punk rock records, but for some reason doesn’t get mentioned that often. I think it’s been reissued just recently, but discogs doesn’t seem to agree with me. Anyhow, “Guns of Revolution” is off their first EP released in 1980 but appeared on said first LP as well. Just ass kickin’ punk rock the way I like it and will never fall out of love with. Happy Friday!

And just like that we’ve reached the last day of January. In all fairness it’s all a bit of a blur because we’ve had so many bitterly cold days and as of recently a ton of snow. The one year anniversary week for “every day at least one song” is slowly coming to an end as well and today’s two songs both come from Southern California. My friend Adrian aka Ava in Switzerland has always been a fantastic resource for good music of all kinds, but more often than not for the true outsider bands and artists. With that it should come as no surprise that I have never heard of Claude Coma and the IV’s, with certainty a forgotten gem from San Diego. Ava dedicates the aptly titled song “Rock’n’Roll Derelict” to his good mate Roger. Cheers for your choice Ava, always great to learn of acts I have never heard of. In comparison to above act I am very familiar with The Skulls from Los Angeles, one of the earliest LA punk rock acts having performed with the likes of The Bags, Weirdos et al in clubs like The Masque during the very early days of punk rock in Los Angeles. In the early 00’s the band reformed as vocalist Billy Bones put together a talented group including ex-The Adicts James Hardslug on bass and the incredible kid James Preston on guitar. I saw the band in Freiburg in Southern Germany and also had the pleasure to interview Billy for the excellent Pankerknacker Fanzine. Merci and cheers to the good people in Electric Annie & the High Tension Wires from Belgium for picking a song by the Skulls which asks the question whether punk rock can pay the bills. I let you answer that and wish you a great day!

Welcome to the last day of this special week and to the month of February. I’ve really enjoyed posting these requests hence I’ll definitely do something like that again, stay tuned. At this point a big cheers to everyone that has reached out and keeps checking out these posts, it’s much appreciated. Today I have three songs from you from two parties, first one being the guys in Gentlemen of Age or just GOA, an old school hardcore punk band from here in Buffalo/NY. I seem to remember listening to a podcast and the fact that at lease one of the members is originally from NYC, hence maybe that’s why Major Conflict from Queens was requested. Regardless, cheers for that one, it’s not an obvious choice. Unlike with Kraut, who hailed from Queens as well, I am actually not so familiar with Major Conflict’s output. I must say I have to amend that as it’s great early ‘80s hardcore punk without that tough macho shit to come just a year later or so. Next up and the last two tracks were requested by my good buddy Alain in Zurich/Switzerland. He’s a life long rock’n’roller, pogoing since ‘77 so to speak. Alain ran for twenty years a fantastic record shop out of the basement of an equally fantastic comic shop. I have countless memories of hanging down there, listening to records, drinking beer and just feeling like home away from home. Over all the years since I’ve left Switzerland back in 2007 we’ve remained in touch and love talking music to this day. Alain’s always been a big fan of music from Australia, so it is no wonder the two songs I am posting are from Down Under. No Class are a new discovery for me, check out these guys with their anthemic Oi punk straight in your face. And last but not least, the good ole’ Cosmic Psychos with one of my favorite videos and songs as well. And since it is Summer and a Sunday in Australia now, I hope you guys are partying like there was no tomorrow. Cheers Alain, and again cheers to everyone! Happy Sunday, and have a beer!
