Every day at least one song - Week # 30 (August 18, 2025)

When I started Barstool Revolution I created a Facebook site and generated a daily thread where I would post at least one song a day. With social media sites increasingly useless for self-promotion to generate traffic to sites like this one - unless you are willing to shell out money - I decided to continue the “tradition” right here to add content and to hopefully generate more traffic to the site. As suggested, every day you will get at least one song, old or new that is, and of any genre. Stay tuned and check in daily!!!

First and foremost, I have been enjoying the cooling off in the temperatures a lot as this summer has been relentlessly hot and dry. It sucks that it’s Monday again, but I must say I sure as hell enjoyed Saturday night at the Big Neck Records Festival with the noisy garage punk stalwards Cheater Slicks headlining. The Ohio trio without a bassist had been on my radar for many years, but it’s just one of those bands I never bothered to look closer into. I definitely don’t regret dragging my ass out to the show as they were superb to say the least. I bought one of the reissues they had at their stall, and I have a feeling it won’t be the last time I’ll purchase one of their records. Happy Monday!

So, last night my wife sits by the TV while I am ironing some clothes for work and Olga the dog is her annoying usual. All of a sudden the picture on the TV goes off while the sound is still on. After trying to revive the TV for an hour or so we gave up. I am certain that watching “Cuomo” did finish this TV off after a thirteen year run, it certainly couldn’t have helped to watch that miserable git. So, no TV party tonight or any other night until a new TV set is bought. Send me your cash you rich kids, and have a good day!

Every country had or in many cases still has people that are driven and make things happen in the underground music scenes and in Germany Alfred Hilsberg was with certainty one of them. He was instrumental in kickstarting the early punk rock movement in Germany, and even more important in shaping the post-punk and neue deutsche welle (NDW) landscape in the years after. He released over two hundred records on his ZickZack record label and of those over a hundred had come out during the first five years of the label’s existence when his motto was “the more the better”. Needless to say that in order for underground music to grow and to find some recognition every place needs people like Alfred, who at the age of seventy-seven passed away yesterday. The compilation LP “Geraeusche fuer die 80er” from 1980 on ZickZack is an important one in many ways, for myself it is the fact that the record includes Razors from Hamburg, one of my all time punk rock faves from Germany, and still going to this day. Rest in Peace Alfred, and a great day to everyone!

I am not into politicizing much, and I definitely never considered myself a political punk, far from. Still, I obviously have my views, and those views have over the years increasingly moved away from any political party due to the fact that political parties don’t represent what we foot soldiers regard as important to our lives and for most of us in the wider society. When in 1982 Mansfield, UK punk outfit Riot Squad released the “Fuck the Tories” EP the opposing Labour Party still had lots to say and was on the side of the working people. Decades later it is hard to see the difference between the Tories and Labour as both parties are mainly interested in lining the pockets of the uber-rich, that’s about it. It’s pretty much the same here in the US with the Democrats and Republicans as they will openly tell you that on many issues they agree, and that’s visible. So, in 2025 this song applies to pretty much every political party as they all suck and are full of shit. Happy Thursday!

On August 20-21 of 1968 the invasion of the former Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact countries and mainly Soviet soldiers began. By 1970, when I was born in Bratislava, the so called “normalization” phase was in full swing and communism had taken over the country alerting my parents that as a young couple they did not want to raise a child in an oppressive system. In 1979 my parents fled communism and through a cousin of my dad’s who was in Switzerland since 1968 we obtained political asylum and remained there. By 1990 when Slobodna Europa from Bratislava released the song posted today the former Czechoslovakia had just freed itself from the fangs of communism after the velvet revolution in November of ‘89. The rest is history as they say, and with that I hope you all have a great day, it’s Friday after all.

Saturday, August 23, 2025:

It’s been a busy 24 hours or so since yesterday afternoon, hence I am finally getting around to post today’s song. Friday after work I briefly stopped at Out There Records to pick up the Death Side 2-LP along some other stuff. Luckily this time around I didn’t forget to grab a copy of Cran’s LP, another great French Oi Punk outfit. Got a new TV last night as well, installed it with wifey this morning and now back out with Olga the dog. That’s about it, tired already and I yet have to cut the lawn and clean up… Happy Saturday!

Sunday, August 24, 2025:

Well, another week’s literally flown by and it’s Sunday morning again. Sometimes on Saturday nights if the weather is cool enough I sit outside and put on a Soul/Funk Youtube channel. It seems that works best for me on a Saturday night, especially yesterday after a long day filled with chores. Needless to say I always discover some good tunes and so for today I give you Bobby Rush, born in the early '30s in Louisiana and by the 1950’s at home in Chicago where he befriended Muddy Waters, Little Walter and co., leading him to become part of the circuit entertaining an increasingly white audience. In the ‘70s Rush picked up on the new trends and “I wanna do the do” is a perfect blend of electric blues, funk and rap. Bobby is 91 years old now and still with us. Happy Sunday!
